S. H. Stanger General Store and Fountain

This is a photograph of the former Temperance Hotel building, which is located on the corner of New Street and State Street. The approximate map coordinates are 39.705014, -75.109216. In the late 1800s, the structure was used as the S. H. Stanger General Store. It is now used by the First United Methodist Church as the Methodist Fellowship House.

This particular photograph shows the building (likely around 1910) and the water fountain that was located in front of the building. This fountain had running water and was used by passing horses and people as drinking water. The S. H. Stanger General Store was founded in 1881 and occupied the first floor of this building; however, it is likely that Stanger also used other spaces within the building for storage. It is believed that S. H. Stanger’s brother, Dr. John Z. Stanger, opened his dental office within this building, likely on the second floor.

In the group of photographs seen below is a photograph with an S. H. Stanger Store sign promoting the Snellenburg's Clothing line. The S. H. Stanger General Store sold a large variety of items including groceries, clothing, glass, and more. In The Glassboro Story, the authors write, “Also appealing to customers were ingenious Stanger sales techniques. In 1893, for example, each customer was given a copy of the book Black Beauty with the purchase of a pair of shoes.” (Most likely from Gibbs and Wesley Shoe Factory). 

In the group of photographs seen below is a photograph with two men standing on the porch. We believe the older man to the left is S. H. Stanger and the man to the right is his son, C. Fleming Stanger.
