Glassboro Post Office

This photograph shows the sixth building used as the Glassboro Post Office. It was located on High Street, just east of the Whitney Building at the approximate coordinates: 39.702958, -75.112374. This preceded the fire station, which was built in the early 1900s.

The structure was built by Thomas Whitney in 1889 and featured scalloped siding and an ornate gable on the porch overhang.

When the devastating October 26, 1895 fire broke out at the Whitney Glass Works, this building survived. After the fire, the Post Office moved again to the southeast corner of Main and High Streets. We believe this was the first building in Glassboro to get electricity.

On the left side of the photo is a man who appears to have a face covering while also holding a rifle. It's possible that this photo was captured during the 1918-20 Spanish Flu pandemic.
