Glassboro Summit Flag Ceremony

In the summer of 1967, Glassboro State College hosted the Glassboro Summit Conference between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin, who met at the Hollybush Mansion on campus. In this photo, the flag that flew over campus in front of Bunce Hall during the Summit is taken down under the supervision of Officer Robert Toughill (far left), Dr. Thomas Robinson (left), a Woman holding a flag (Unidentified), and Chief of Police Everett Watson (far right). Robert Toughill, who pioneered the Glassboro Police Department K-9 Unit, later became the Chief of Police in 1985. In addition to working on security for the Summit, Toughill also oversaw President Ronald Reagan's visit in 1985. After the Glassboro Summit, the flag was donated to the Heritage Glass Museum, where it stayed for almost 44 years. In 2023, the flag was permanently loaned to the Glassboro Historical Society's archive.
