Fire at the Auditorium

The Auditorium was located on Academy street, directly across from the Academy Street School. It was built in 1910, and presented on September 1st. It was located on Academy street, directly across from the Academy Street School. It was built by brother-in-laws, Charles P. Abbott and John Long.

Moffitt and Stewart of Camden who were well known architects at the time, were the people who designed the building. Thomas L. Munyon was the contractor for the building. There were many famous people who spoke on the steps, including: Woodrow Wilson, Robert Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Sadly, the building was wholly destroyed by a mysterious fire on January 26, 1917. Ironically on the day before the night of the fire, it was described as being, "fireproof as the walls were covered with sheet metal and the latest type of heating".

The auditorium was never rebuilt, and was a huge loss for the people.
