Academy Street School Fire, 1917
Text
The Academy Street School has been consumed by fire twice. The first time was in 1893, when it was a wooden building. The school was rebuilt as a stone building.
On February 21, 1917 the Academy Street School burned down. All 500 students, and teachers, were able to escape without harm.
Ironically, it was a month after the fire at the Auditorium across the street. All the classes were held in various buildings, for the time being.
The school then was rebuilt in 1920, as a grammar school.
