German Prisoners of War in Glassboro

This is a photograph of ten German prisoners of war held at the Glassboro Prison Camp, which was located at what is now 152 Delsea Drive; map coordinates 39.689897, -75.099849. The camp held as many as 800 men, who were hired and paid to work on many local farms.

This photo was taken at the DeEugenio Farm which is located at the end of University Blvd at the map coordinates: 39.708305, -75.132912. By all accounts, the men were treated with respect and well cared for. Articles and personal stories describe that after the war many of these men kept in contact with the DeEugenio family, including visiting the family after the war. The photograph seems to depict that the friendly atmosphere of their group, while also, through the letter P hand painted on their shirts, implies their status as prisoners.
