The Remains of the Whitney Glass Works Company Store after Devastating Fire

This photograph shows the remains of the Whitney Glassworks Company Store after the devastating October 26, 1895 fire. The Whitney Glassworks Company Store was located on the northwest corner of High Street and Main Street near these current coordinates: 39.702918, -75.112016

The Whitney Glassworks Company Store was part of the Whitney Glassworks factory complex and the structure was located near an old steam grist and sawmill. The mill was used to ground grains from the Whitney farm and process lumber, which was used to create the railroad.

The building was prone to fires due to its close proximity to the Whitney Glassworks furnaces and the steam grist and sawmill. Vats of water were placed near every furnace to help extinguish fires.

Though precautions were established, the Whitney Glassworks was a dangerous working environment, and fires were a frequent hazard. In addition, the area around the Whitney Glassworks and Store was likely engulfed with a constant cloud of smoke and ash.
